Job Description for Defence Shift Team Leader (STL):
NNL is where your understanding of reactors fuels the nation. As part of our Fuel Reactor & Reprocessing capability, you’ll play a vital role in developing our understanding of nuclear fuels once they reach the end of their lifespan, and helping to inform future reactor operations.
NNL is conducting a major programme of work for one of our customers in heavily shielded cells in the Active Handling Facility (AHF) on Sellafield site. The programme requires NNL to deploy a number of scientific techniques for Post Irradiation Examination (PIE) of nuclear fuel to assist in underpinning reactor safety cases. In order to meet demanding timelines for this data, NNL has implemented a shift rotation pattern.
The PIE (Post Irradiation Examination) Shift Team Leader (STL) will work with scientists and PIE technicians, based at Windscale Active Handling Facility (AHF), for customers such as Rolls-Royce and MoD. Working as part of 3 shift teams, each supervising and managing five PIE shift technicians, the post holder will attend work on a rotating double day shift pattern. The candidate will need to maximise the potential of the shift team, including development of people (behaviourally and technically), and equipment to meet customer and NNL ambitions. They will ensure a clear line of sight of all safety and security responsibilities and the availability of ready for service resource to support delivery. be a member of the AHF emergency response team.
In instances (e.g. planned plant outages) the post holders may be required to revert temporarily to a standard day working pattern, but will move back onto a shift pattern in accordance with the forward programme of work.
The position requires the maintenance of strong working relationships with the immediate team, project management and facility teams. The programme requires team members to work to very high quality standards and demonstrate an enabling, pro-active attitude to resolving issues. In accordance with any nuclear industry positions, individuals will need to demonstrate a high degree of nuclear professionalism, adhering and contributing to a positive health and safety culture. The candidate will maintain strong work relationships with the customer and all touchpoints throughout the organisation, and work closely with the capability managers within the Defence programme.
Main Responsibilities for Defence Shift Team Leader (STL):
- Safety, Security and Quality: The STL is accountable for safety, security and quality performance within their individual shift team and must ensure that; staff have completed all mandatory training required, provision of resource to enable safety / security supervision and safe / secure operations, “Out of Norm” EHSS&Q events must be reported and reviewed on OSHENS within business timescales, staff are aware and adhere of security requirements and protocols.
- Safety & Security Leadership: The STL will be accountable for nuclear safety and security whilst on the shift working pattern within AHF in their role acting as Building Controller/Task Supervisor / First Aider as required.
- Team Performance: The STL will be accountable for team and individual performance, maintenance of technical skills within their shift team including ensuring performance of staff is managed and monitored via Performance and Development Review (PDR) process.
- Delivering for our Customer: Fostering a positive delivery culture in the team whilst maintaining focus on safety, security and quality.
- The STL will be accountable for ensuring resources within their shift team are deployed on activities within their skillset or under adequate levels of supervision, and workload appropriately managed.
- To carry out the role of AHF Cave Coordinator.
- To carry out the role of AHF Task Supervisor.
- To carry out the role of AHF Building Controller.
Essential Criteria for Defence Shift Team Leader (STL):
- Demonstrable experience delivering for customers.
- Experience of working within and leading multidisciplinary teams.
- A track record of applying knowledge in practical applications.
- Excellent communication and team working skills.
- Positive attitude to learning and supporting the wider development of the team.
- A proven ability to safely deliver highly regulated activities and demonstration of a positive attitude to safety, security, and other EHSS&Q requirements.
- A pro-active and flexible approach to customer support and project delivery in making sure that requirements and expectations are met or exceeded.
- British citizen as defined in the British Nationality Act 1981 (British Nationality Act 1981 (legislation.gov.uk)). Please note if you hold a dual nationality, of which one nationality is British, you may still be considered but this is dependent on your dual nationality.
- Ability to obtain SC level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial and criminal record checks plus 5 years’ worth of UK residency).
