Job Description for Capability Manager – Characterisation and Effluent Rig Operations Team - Secondment:

We are looking for a motivated individual to manage the Characterisation and Effluent Rig Operations team based at Workington Laboratory. This is a chemistry and engineering focused team, working on non-active bench and rig scale projects, delivering a varied portfolio of work focused on customer’s operational needs and developing innovative techniques and solutions, working across a number of disciplines. The team has a strong track record of working closely with customers and other experts within NNL and beyond. 

This role is to co-ordinate and lead the technical and operational activities, assuring safe, successful delivery of agreed customer work scopes and continuous improvement of the team’s activities.

This will include identifying opportunities for operational improvements, staff development/recruitment and new customer work alongside successful completion of related actions in line with the Waste Behaviour Characterisation & Immobilisation area Capability Strategy, EHSS&Q improvement plans and assurance actions.

This is a fixed term (approximately 12 month) secondment opportunity that will provide a means for the successful candidate to showcase and develop their capability management skills.

Main Responsibilities for Capability Manager – Characterisation and Effluent Rig Operations Team - Secondment:

  • Duty of care for all team members and ownership of related equipment and facilities.
  • Safe delivery of all technical work undertaken within customer projects and programs, including delivery of EHSS&Q Improvement Plan and Assurance Plan activities.
  • Leadership of team and responsible for performance management, SQEP, development, technical training, progression and recruitment of team members.
  •  Efficient and effective identification, procurement, maintenance, utilisation and disposal of all equipment, materials and facilities required and owned by the team.
  • Leads on customer delivery, both internal and external, ensuring quality and value added 
  • Direct engagement with customers, NNL Account Directors, etc to understand their needs, add value via successful technical delivery, maximise current business opportunities and support the development of new ones in line with the Capability Strategy.
  • Accountable to Capability Leader in compiling team budget reflecting staff and fixed costs relating to skills and capability maintenance, recruitment, training, progression, fixed costs, Reward & Recognition, etc.
  • Successful achievement of business targets in relation to set budgets and management of variations to minimise impact on NNL and customers.
  • Accountable for cultural and business strategies associated with the team, recognising related innovations and opportunities and leadership of resulting change programmes.

Essential Criteria for Capability Manager – Characterisation and Effluent Rig Operations Team - Secondment:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience engaging with and delivering to a range of stakeholders and customers, both internal and external, and building strong collaborative relationships.
  • Acts as a role model to NNL’s values and behaviours.
  • Proven ability to deliver work to high standards of EHSS&Q within a highly regulated environment.
  • Experience with implementing improvement actions and driving cultural change.
  • Ability to obtain BPSS level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment and criminal record checks).

Desirable Criteria for Capability Manager – Characterisation and Effluent Rig Operations Team - Secondment:

  • Technical understanding of effluent management and waste characterisation in relation to nuclear applications, or alternative technical knowledge and experience that is complimentary and an indicator of the ability to quickly pick this up.
  • Experience in managing a technical team, people, facilities or equipment on a nuclear and non-nuclear site is desirable, otherwise complimentary skills indicating the ability to work in this environment. This does not have to be directly as a line manger but could be as a task supervisor, technical lead etc.
