Job Description

The National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) has a radiation shielding consultant vacancy for a growing capability within NNL. The successful candidate can expect to work on exciting and innovative projects to assist NNL and the wider UK in its missions; particularly in clean energy and net zero. We have invested in all major radiation transport codes such as MCBEND, RANKERN, MCNP, SCALE and Attila.

Together with a new cluster the successful candidate will have a great opportunity to develop their career. Full training will be provided with a dedicated training plan. 

The location for this role is flexible and can be based at Risley, Preston or Sellafield.

Main responsibilities

Main Responsibilities for Radiation Shielding Consultant:

  • Lead on the technical delivery of projects to time, cost and quality.
  • Technically Lead on small projects.
  • Assist/ Mentor in the delivery and training of less experienced members of the team.
  • Working collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team finding optimal and ALARP solutions to shielding design.
  • Developing and maintaining skills for radiation shielding and continuing professional development.
  • Active involvement in both internal and external presentations at conferences and relevant national industry groups.

Ideal candidate

Essential Criteria for Radiation Shielding Consultant:

  • Degree in a STEM subject.
  • Demonstrable experience is required in radiation shielding design and/or use of radiation transport codes. 
  • Ability to obtain SC level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial and criminal record checks plus 5 years’ worth of UK residency).

Desirable Criteria for Radiation Shielding Consultant:

  • Physics Degree.
  • Experience in computer programming such as Python for pre and post processing activities.
