Responding to Powering Up Britain, Paul Howarth, CEO, National Nuclear Laboratory, said: “Today’s announcements bring further clarity and certainty to the government’s commitment to deliver on both the UK’s energy security and net zero future. Nuclear will be at the heart of this, working in an integrated energy system alongside other key low-carbon technologies.

“In Great British Nuclear, the UK now has a vehicle responsible for driving delivery of a new nuclear programme, overseeing the roll-out of new technologies. The ability to sustain and grow our sovereign capabilities and skills across reactor and fuel technology is critical.

“As the UK’s national laboratory, we are clear in our role and in how we will best help implement this agenda, by continuing to drive the science and innovation to enable nuclear to benefit society.”
