The Sustainable Nuclear Energy Technology Platform (SNETP) was set up in 2007 to promote and coordinate research activities in the field of nuclear fission. Members are drawn from industry, research, safety organisations, universities and non-governmental bodies who are interested in developing safe and sustainable nuclear power.

NNL is represented on the Governing Board by Graham Fairhall, Chief Science and Technology Officer, with the role of developing an EU technology roadmap for deployment and to offer R&D support to nuclear energy in Europe.

NNL was one of the founding members, providing input to define SNETP’s vision and strategic research agenda.

At the most recent board meeting last week, 5 new memberships brought the total number of organisations involved to 102. Chairman of the SNETP Governing Board, Frantisek Pazdera said, “I am delighted to welcome the 100th member to our sustainable nuclear research community. The rapid growth of the Platform over the last four years is witness to the widespread interest and support that exists in the long-term development of our industry. Together we can make a major contribution to Europe’s low-carbon energy supplies by underpinning the production of safe, competitive and sustainable nuclear power.”

SNETP has three main research areas:

• Generation II/II reactors
• Generation IV fast neutron reactors
• Nuclear co-generation

Other UK organisations involved include AMEC, Dalton Nuclear Institute, Cogent, Serco, University of Hull, University of Central Lancashire, EDF Energy and TWI.
