Andy, the ANS Man

With its core purpose to promote the awareness and understanding of nuclear science and technology, the American Nuclear Society (ANS) is a not-for-profit, international, scientific and educational organisation. The ANS has global influence in many areas including reactor physics. In a huge acknowledgement of the NNL’s technical expertise in reactor and fuel technology, Technical Authority Andrew Worrall has been invited to join the ANS Reactor Physics Division’s Technical Program Committee. It’s a position that Andrew was delighted to accept. In his invitation note to Andrew, Program Chair Fausto Franceschini said: “Your experience and knowledge is very broad, well established and widely recognised in the nuclear world. “Plus you have an outstanding record of involvement in activities that go beyond the day to day task of a nuclear professional, such as conference organisation, collaboration with universities, participation in several scientific committees etc. This to me is a clear indication of the commitment and drive towards the advancement of the nuclear cause that would be most beneficial to the RPD Division.”The division’s objectives are to promote the advancement of knowledge and understanding of the fundamental physical phenomena characterising nuclear reactors and other nuclear systems.Andrew’s appointment is another key contributor towards the objective of making the NNL an internationally recognised centre of excellence. He has also recently accepted an invitation to chair a session on light water reactors at the Global 2009 conference in Paris in September. The conference has the theme ‘The Nuclear Fuel Cycle: Sustainable Options and Industrial Perspectives’ and this is the third conference in a row that Andrew has been invited to chair a session.
